ENGLEFIELD BAY | WEEKLY FISHING REPORT

Sorry this past weeks fishing report is a couple of days late, but the fishing has been absolutely insane out here and we have been busy! This past trip we hosted Geoff Godden and his JDRF fishing classic, a fun derby for everyone at the lodge that supports a great cause, and the participants were fortunate enough to have epic weather and fishing as well!

Our anglers broke the seasons best fish load this past trip by bringing in over 8500 pounds of fish, obviously, the fishing has been epic but a fish load of this capacity in early July is a sure sign of one thing, the coho are here! We have been starting to see increasing numbers of the smaller, “silver” Salmon but at this point I think it is safe to say that we will be seeing consistent numbers of these guys for the remainder of the season. Bone Point and Denham Bay seem to be holding the best numbers of Coho and a flasher, hoochie combo seems to be enticing them the most thus far. Chinook are still abundant in large numbers and the average size has started to increase as well, we had 6 Tyee sized fish come in over the last 4 days. Rob McHattie was the star of the show, he hooked and landed a beauty 40-pound spring off Denham Point to set the bar for the biggest “Spring” of the season thus far, great work Rob!

Bottom fishing for Halibut continues to be consistent, however has become a little bit tougher on the Shoals so anglers have started to spread out to some other areas in search of the tasty bottom feeders. Those who put some work in have still been successful on the shoals, as well as up north near Lihou Island, Willie Island and even down South of Denham Bay and around Cape Henry. For the Lingcod, we have been finding success near the kelp beds on the shoreline all over the place, and of course near the various pinnacles “out front”.

We are most definitely looking forward to the second half of our season here in Englefield, and anticipating a big July and August out here on the West side of Haida Gwaii. Our guests continue to come back to the dock with overwhelming smiles after successful days of fishing all while taking in the breathtaking scenery of the West Coast of Haida Gwaii. We have a select few dates with limited space left, if you are interested in a fishing adventure with us, now is the time to plan your trip of a lifetime.

Take care,
Ryan Jacobs
